Statement from Founding Chairperson – Lady Winifred Kamit – CBE
Coalition for Change Papua New Guinea Inc. (CFC PNG) is a community based not for profit organisation. It was officially launched on the 27th of November 2007 by then Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Lands, Physical Planning and Mining, the Honourable Dr Puka Temu. It was registered on the 14th of January 2008.
CFC PNG was formed following the presentation of a petition calling for the elimination of violence within the family, by Dame Carol Kidu, then Minister for Community Development, to the National Parliament on the 9th of October 2007. The petition was organized by a group of concerned women in response to a horrific act of violence against a pregnant wife by her husband. Public outrage saw 6,500 men and women sign the petition demanding serious government action on the issue of family violence.
CFC PNG is working towards creating a Papua New Guinea where its citizens and residents especially its women and children can live lives free of gender, spousal and familial violence.
In September 2013, CFC PNG joined its members and sponsors to celebrate the passage of the Family Protection Act 2013. The Act was in itself an important and major achievement of the Strategic Plan 2008-2012.
The Family Protection Act is the enabling legislation that underpins a countrywide response to Family Violence.
CFC PNG will focus on identifying opportunities to partner with likeminded organisations in order to improve awareness of the Family Protection Act and engage individuals as Champions and partners for its programmes.
The role of CFC PNG is to advocate and work together with partners to implement legislative reform and inform policy making in order to effectively mandate all citizens and residents to bring about cultural change.
We have a challenging year in 2016 with a number of programs taking off. I strongly believe that with the support and assistance from our sponsors, partners, members and other likeminded organisations, we will deliver on these programs.
